Excitement in Semarang as Kids Learn Nutrition via Undip Students’ AR-Based ‘Food Model Box’

SEMARANG – Students from Thematic Community Service (KKN-T) Team 8, Group 1 of Universitas Diponegoro (Undip) have launched an innovative digital learning program through an Augmented Reality (AR)-based Educational Tool (APE). The event took place in RW 02, Ngemplak Simongan Village, West Semarang, on Sunday, January 25, 2026.

The program targets children from Kindergarten (TK) to Elementary School (SD) age, supporting the “Isi Piringku” (My Plate) nutrition education initiative. This AR-based tool showcases 3D visualizations of food groups in line with the Indonesian Ministry of Health’s guidelines, including staple foods, side dishes (proteins), vegetables, and fruits.

Muhamad Ulil Ahkam, the program’s initiator, explained that the media was designed using the Assemblrworld platform. The visual designs are embedded in QR codes printed on the packaging of the “Food Model Box.”

“We chose the AR method as an educational tool to capture the attention of Gen Alpha children who are already so familiar with the digital world. In addition to seeing ‘live’ 3D models, children can also read descriptions and learn about the nutritional benefits of each food item that appears on the screen,” said Ahkam.

A total of 33 children participated enthusiastically in the event. The activity was structured through Focus Group Discussions (FGD) and interactive games. The participants were divided into four groups, with each group guided by KKN students to scan the Food Model Box. Once the 3D models appeared, each group competed to present the balanced nutrition menu they had discovered.

Abrar, one of the participants, shared his excitement with the learning method. “The program was fun; we played in groups, and the pictures actually popped up,” he said.

At the end of the event, each participant received a Food Model Box to take home. The team hopes that this educational tool will continue to be used at home, ensuring that nutrition education on balanced meals continues within the family setting.
